Every family holiday has its special moments. Some are quickly forgotten, while others become stories you still talk about years later. Even before our trip, we knew we wanted more than just relaxation—we wanted to share a real family adventure. During our stay at Camping Le Haut Salat, we experienced exactly that.

After several wonderfully relaxing days by the river, on the spacious meadows, and surrounded by nature, we decided it was time for a little adventure. We made a deal with our children: if they joined us on a challenging hike with an overnight stay in a mountain hut, they could spend the rest of the holiday exactly as they wished.

To our surprise, we hardly had to persuade them. Their reaction? Excitement instead of negotiations.

We set off early in the morning. Ahead of us lay a ten-kilometre climb to Refuge des Estagnous, a mountain hut nestled in the heart of the Mont Valier Massif. The hike is challenging and requires a good level of fitness as well as sure-footedness. As our family enjoys hiking regularly, the recommendation from the campsite reception was exactly what we were looking for. Equipped with a hiking guide, trail map, and plenty of helpful advice, we felt well prepared for the journey ahead.
The first few kilometres followed the famous GR10 long-distance hiking trail. Before long, we left the main route behind and continued along our own path through the spectacular mountain landscape. Thanks to the excellent trail markings, navigation was easy throughout the hike, allowing us to focus entirely on the scenery and enjoy every step of the adventure.

Our first breathtaking moment came sooner than expected: Nérech Waterfall. With incredible force, the water cascaded down the rocks into the valley below—a place that naturally makes you stop, take in the view, and forget about the trail for a while. After snapping a few photos and taking a deep breath, we continued our journey.
Not long afterwards, we decided to take a short 30-minute detour to the Étangs Long et Rond. It was absolutely worth it. The peaceful lakes, surrounded by wide-open mountain scenery and remarkable tranquillity, made this one of the most beautiful spots of the day.
We enjoyed our picnic right on the lakeshore, surrounded by silence and the gentle sound of the water. The children didn't need much encouragement—they quickly took off their shoes and dipped their feet into the icy water, first hesitantly, then with laughter and excitement. Before long, we followed their example.
These are exactly the kinds of spontaneous moments that make a family hike so special—simple, authentic, and the memories that stay with you long after the holiday is over.

By late afternoon, we reached Refuge des Estagnous. Tired but happy, we settled into our sleeping quarters, treated ourselves to a well-earned aperitif, and ended the day with a simple dinner featuring local specialities.

As the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountain peaks, everything became wonderfully quiet. In front of us stretched the majestic Mont Valier Massif, while the valleys of Ariège lay far below. It was one of those unforgettable views that make every step of the climb worthwhile. Surrounded by the mountain air, we slept deeply and peacefully.

The next morning began with breakfast and a spectacular panorama right outside the hut. Before setting off on the hike back to the campsite, we picked up a packed lunch from the refuge—a convenient option that made the return journey even more enjoyable, allowing us to stop for a picnic whenever we found the perfect spot along the trail.

At Camping Le Haut Salat, it’s often the simple touches that make a family holiday so enjoyable. The heated indoor swimming pool is perfect for relaxing, especially on cooler days—an ideal way to unwind after an active day exploring the Pyrenees.

The Salat River flows right alongside the campsite and quickly became one of our favourite places. In the morning, we would dip our feet into the cool water, while the afternoons were perfect for swimming or simply relaxing on the riverbank. If you enjoy fishing, you're in luck too—trout fishing is possible here, and fishing permits can be purchased in the nearby village of Seix.

On Sundays, it's well worth taking a short stroll to the local weekly market, where you'll find regional products and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. Thanks to the campsite's convenient location, shops and everyday essentials are also within easy walking distance.

For a quieter break in nature, we also recommend the La Paloumère forest trail. This easy woodland walk is perfect for families looking for a gentle stroll and a peaceful moment surrounded by the beauty of the Ariège countryside.

There’s plenty to discover just beyond the gates of the campsite Le Haut Salat. Whether you're looking for a relaxed afternoon outing or a full day of adventure, the surrounding region offers something for every family.
Just a short walk from the campsite is the Château de Seix, a former fortress that now houses exhibitions about the history, culture, and natural heritage of the Haut-Salat valleys.
A little further afield, around 30 kilometres away, you'll find the spectacular Cirque de Cagateille. This impressive glacial cirque is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and offers well-marked walking trails that are accessible for many families, making it an unforgettable day out in the Pyrenees.
If you prefer a slower pace, spend some time in the charming spa village of Aulus-les-Bains, wander through the picturesque mountain village of Cominac, or explore the historic town of Saint-Lizier, one of the region's cultural gems.
Families looking for a little more excitement can head to the Guzet-Neige mountain resort, where summer activities include downhill mountain biking, an alpine coaster, and go-karting. It’s the perfect complement to days spent hiking and relaxing by the river, creating a holiday filled with nature, adventure, and unforgettable family moments.
