Upon arriving at Camping Les Sources in Saint-Jean-du-Gard, we immediately noticed the establishment's human scale. With only 92 pitches, it is a truly family-oriented campsite where we felt comfortable right away. Throughout our stay, every single day brought something different, making our vacation incredibly dynamic.
We frequently went swimming in the river very close to the campsite, dipping into the Gardon at the village of Mialet, which was just a short 10-minute walk away. We would walk down to the Abarides Bridge (pont des Abarides), a deeply pleasant spot to cool off and fully enjoy the surrounding nature.
We also regularly headed out to an even more beautiful swimming spot: the Martinet Waterfalls (cascades du Martinet), located near Saint-Étienne-Vallée-Française. It was a spectacular location featuring crisp, cool water in a completely natural setting. On top of that, we often enjoyed the campsite swimming pool. The kids especially loved it, giving the adults a chance to finally rest, read in peace, or simply savor the quiet atmosphere.
Several days were dedicated to outings to explore the region's tourist sites. We set off on foot from the campsite to the village of Saint-Jean-du-Gard to catch the Cévennes steam train, which cost €17.50 per adult for a return ticket. After a train ride of about 15 minutes, we stopped at the Bambouseraie (Bamboo Grove). Afterward, we hopped back on the steam train to Anduze to visit the village before returning the exact same way. It was a highly enjoyable day combining the discovery of the Bambouseraie and a stroll through Anduze, made even more fun for the children thanks to the novelty of the train ride.
With our kids, we also spent a day at AquaForest in Bagard, located just 15 minutes from the campsite. It is an incredibly complete activity park featuring treetop adventures (accrobranche), a giant slide, and an escape game—perfect for a fantastic day filled with energy and laughter.
For a touch of culture, we visited the Maison Rouge museum. It was a true discovery for the children, who became completely fascinated by silkworm rearing and the history of silk thread production. The museum succeeded in being both fun and highly educational, allowing them to learn while having a great time. For our final excursion, we headed to the Trabuc Cave (grotte de Trabuc), about 10 minutes from the campsite. It was the ideal place to find some welcome coolness, especially on that particular day when the weather was starting to get really hot.
Every time we returned to the campsite, the welcome was consistently warm. We often dined at the campsite restaurant, which offered high-quality local products at a very reasonable price, such as the Menu Randonneur (hiker's menu) for €21. We particularly loved the steak with Pélardon cream sauce—Pélardon being a traditional goat cheese from the Cévennes—which was a beautifully delicious culinary discovery.
The entertainment was a massive hit with our children, who absolutely adored the activities, particularly the Neon Night (soirée Fluo). Our daughter talked about it so much that she even shared the story with her class at school upon her return. The campsite also organized plenty of lively musical evenings, which we thoroughly enjoyed in a consistently friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
In the end, it was a holiday that simply came together on its own. We lived strictly to the rhythm of the day; the children enjoyed themselves to the absolute fullest, and we finally took the time to just slow down. It was exactly what we had come here to find.
