About this campsite
Camping Le Grand Large
*****
Situated in the dunes, just next to a gently sloping fine sandy beach, facing the Channel Islands. Camp-site with a calm and family atmosphere.
Just past the sand dune: Our 10-day family getaway at Camping Le Grand Large
What Made Our Cotentin Holiday Special
Direct access to Sciotot Beach and magnificent sea Views: The campsite is separated from the shore only by a sand dune, offering front-row seats to the spectacular beach sunsets.
Welcome and attentive staff: The team ensures a stress-free arrival by providing useful resources, such as custom hiking recommendations like the 4 km Anse de Sciotot trail and a comprehensive calendar of local village festivals, markets, and garage sales.
Friendly pool area: The indoor pool space is highly popular with families, giving children a fantastic place to swim and splash around even on days when the weather is uncertain
Quiet and Natural Setting, Perfect for Relaxation: A peaceful and calm atmosphere featuring spacious caravan pitches of about 100 m².
Excellent Base for Discovering the Cotentin Region: Ideally located for regional exploration, making it easy to embark on coastal hikes along the GR223 or take a quick 20-minute drive to Cherbourg to visit La Cité de la Mer using discounted tickets bought directly at reception.
The campsite offers some activities and entertainment: family activities in the afternoon, Kids' activities once a week on Monday afternoons, volleyball and football tournaments for older kids.
Our holiday came at the recommendation of a friend who knew we were searching for peace, quiet, and a location right by the sea. Camping Le Grand Large turned out to be the perfect base for exploring the Cotentin region with the family. Traveling with our two children, aged 6 and 8, we spent about ten days in August on a caravan pitch. To make things easier for us, we had requested a spot close to the sanitary blocks ahead of time, and we were pleased to find our pitch quite spacious, measuring around 100 m².
Every morning started on a high note thanks to the on-site bread and pastry service. Not needing to pre-order was a massive plus, especially since we don't get bread this good back home! For larger necessities, all the local supermarkets and shops were just 4 km away, making it incredibly convenient to stock up on groceries for the entirety of our stay.
Beach rituals and multilingual fun
One of the absolute highlights of our trip was the direct beach access, with only a sand dune separating the campsite from the shore. Gathering on the sand to watch the spectacular sunset became an essential family ritual, shared with many other campers looking to admire the view. We even got to experience the local Sciotot festival week; because the fireworks were launched right from the beach, we enjoyed one of the best views of the entire show without even leaving the campsite.
Back on the grounds, the entertainment team kept the atmosphere lively yet relaxed. The children loved the afternoon and evening family activities, particularly the ball games on the beach and various team sports. A huge asset was the animator, who spoke four different languages including german and english, ensuring our kids understood everything perfectly. Right on our first Monday, we joined a parent-child meetup, which was fantastic for helping the kids make friends early on. Once they connected, they met up almost daily at the playground—complete with slides, swings, and a roundabout—as well as the trampoline and the inflatable structure.
Active Days on Land, Water, and Court
We kept nicely active throughout the ten days with a great mix of sports. The campsite provides free tennis equipment loans, allowing the four of us to try our hand at a match together on their court. While the kids and I spent some afternoons playing pétanque with fellow holidaymakers, the children also spent plenty of time splashing around in the indoor pool area, which was a lifesaver on days when the weather felt uncertain.
We also decided to test out the local waves by renting two surfboards directly from the campsite, and the kids were absolutely thrilled to practice balancing and riding on the water. Even the classic bi-weekly lotto night brought a fun surprise, as the animator hosted the entire game seamlessly in four languages.
Discovering the treasures of Cotentin
The campsite team made exploring the local culture incredibly straightforward. Upon arrival, they handed us a full schedule of local village festivals, markets, night markets, and garage sales, which perfectly matched our love for local sightseeing.
For outdoor excursions, the reception desk suggested several easy hikes tailored for families. We ended up walking a 4 km portion of the GR223 trail around the Anse de Sciotot. My husband also tracked down the GPX route for the Trail de T’cheu Nous race to run it himself, while the children and I followed the shorter walking route associated with the event.
We also took a day trip to La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg, located just 20 minutes away. The campsite reception sells discounted tickets directly at the desk, meaning we bypassed the ticket lines entirely. We spent a wonderful day exploring the submarine and the dedicated Titanic exhibition.
Planning a swift return
Evenings at the campsite wrapped up beautifully; on one particular night, we enjoyed an on-site concert and had dinner right there at the campground. Our stay was such a successful mix of relaxation, family bonding, and regional discovery that before heading home, we placed an option on a pitch for next summer to guarantee we get our favorite spot.

Review of the campsite
Location. Facilities. Size of pitches. Staff friendliness.
Stop children running about after midnight. Appeared to be no consideration from other campers about noise after dark. Balls being bounced on the road, scooters and bikes being ridden around late at night. Large groups of children out far too late. Biggest complaint was that several pitches and the cabins were booked by large groups leading to the large groups congregating near to pitches with couples only on them late into the night making far too much noise.
Accommodation review - Pitch
Good size.
Some too close to the cabins. Not all the occupants of the cabins understood campsite’s etiquette around noise and groups gathering.

Hard to find a dislike. A truly lovely site.
Review of the campsite
Initially we thought this site was too commercial but we’ve now visited twice at the beginning and end of a 3 week break and concluded it is the best we’ve tried in Normandy. 100% clean and friendly, helpful staff always there. 3 super clean pools, bar, mini shop and snacks available at reasonable prices. The beach is at the end of the site with numerous benches to watch the sun go down (popular pastime). Surprisingly quiet. Pitches big enough. A play area to one side which most people miss. Lots of information posted of tides, events, markets etc. In High season there’s a full timetable.
Maybe a 10pm noise curfew? Clearer signs to the play area?

Lovely campsite
Review of the campsite
We have stayed at the site before also in June. Peaceful but busy campsite with direct access to a wonderful sandy beach. Dogs allowed on the beach so a bonus for us. Good size pitches. Friendly reception staff.
Spotless facilities. Situated in a quiet location but walkable along the beach to a restaurant. Lovely town a short drive away with all amenities. We will return.
The only improvement I would suggest is to open the shop at 8.30 for bread and breakfast pastries. Currently 9am.

Good size pitch for our caravan. We were lucky to have some shade. Hedges between so quite private.
